Since the first week of school, I have incorporated growth mindset in my classroom. I have seen most of the students feel more comfortable when they mistakes and we can "fix" them. This takes place during the Math Meeting time where the students make number sentences and they are adding (or subtracting) to get to the number of the day. For example for the number 27, a student says 30-15+9, and I tell her that that is 24 and then she adds 3 more to get to 27. Most all the students love this part, even the ones that struggle in school.
For my growth mindset paper, I had named my fixed mindset "Fanny" and I had told the students her name for the first week of school. I wanted the students to help me name the growth mindset and also give boys names to the two mindsets. So enter...Felix, Glinda, and Griff. Today, I got to have a discussion with one of my students about Felix and Griff. The class started a new computer program and the first thing they had to do was to take a test to see where they needed to be placed. This little one sometimes feels like he cannot do the work, so he stops himself before he even tries. I told him that Felix was trying to make him not try, but Griff was pulling for him so he could grow. I could tell that he could understand that I wanted him to try. He went to the computer and did not get upset. This was a success!
