Wordset.org defines a portfolio as a set of pieces or creative work collected to be shown to potential customers or employers. Fresno State defines an ePortfolio as a digital collection of work that documents and showcases knowledge, skills, and abilities, and their growth over time. Even though we might be showing our future or even current employers our portfolio, we do want it to be for ourselves because it will be more meaningful to us.
This week I have really started to ponder the importance of reflection. It is something that takes my time (out of school) and it takes time out of me actually doing the teaching the students. (This is my little control area.) I know that reflections allow the students really think about what they are learning. I believe that the students will start to take ownership in all what they are learning.
Just like I am making a portfolio, I am also having my students make a portfolio. This is the second year that I am having my students use Seesaw (digital portfolio.) Last year, I had them talk about their projects, but this year I want them to also reflect over their work. I think that I might have the students start looking at some other students work and reflect and start to comment over their work. This will start small, maybe with some sentence stems. This past Friday, I had all the students write a growth mindset sentence and decorate it. I just might use those.
So, why do I use an ePortfolio? I do want to put my work in a central place so I can share it with people that might be interested in what I am learning about. It also gives me a chance to take ownership with my learning through my reflections.
